Early Intervention

The Early Intervention Model

Yates Avenue Support Class Early Intervention is programme is to support children with disabilities and to prepare them for the most appropriate future placement in the school system. There are 2 groups of approximately 8 students. Children will either attend 3 mornings, or 2 mornings a week. Typically students attend Mon/Tue/Wed or Thurs/Fri. The Early Intervention support class teacher provides specialist support for children below school age who have a confirmed disability. Early Intervention staff work with families and other stakeholders and schools to support each child’s development and meaningful participation in all aspects of their life. There is a strong focus on supporting each child’s inclusion in early childhood education and successful transition to school.

The session will include the development of routines to enhance:

- communication skills

- social skills

- independence

- fine and gross-motor skills

- school-readiness skills

- some pre-academic skills

We have a range of learning environments including:

- Kindy-Gym room

- sensory room,

- sensory garden,

- vegetable garden

- preschool and preschool playground

- wider school environment

Our routines include:

- Arrival, greeting and unpacking,

- social play in a range of environments including the classroom, the KindyGym and outdoors

- desk-work with a focus on name writing, fine motor skills, drawing, cutting, pasting and early literacy and numeracy skills,

- using the bathroom and washing hands,

- a school-like morning group time on the mat which will focus on vocabulary, stories, and school skills like sitting, waiting, taking turns, verbal and non-verbal communication as well as how to use interactive boards

- Morning fruit and water break - unpacking lunchboxes, accessing food and drink, asking for help

- Pack away, farewell and departure routine

We try to incorporate students' interests, and to build on their strengths, as well as to address the areas where they have higher support needs, or in areas which are barriers to their inclusion or access to school curriculum and environments in 2024. Together we will work towards agreed individual goals for your child.
